Introduction
  • The New Zealand Falcon (Karearea), is also known as the Sparrow Hawk, and the Bush Hawk,

  • It is a fast-flying raptor that is only found in New Zealand

  • It's habitat is Native Forests mainly in hilly areas.

  • It's prey is birds and small mammals (Mice/Rats)

  • It is 42-48cm big and is often mistaken for the Australian Harrier Hawk.

  • There are three forms that vary in size, colour and habitats and level of threat of extinction .
    • The ‘Bush Falcon' is found in the forests of the North Island and the northwestern South Island
      - Nationally endangered


    • the ‘Eastern Falcon' habitat is the open country of the eastern South Island - Nationally Vulnerable
    • the ‘Southern Falcon' is of the coastal Fiordland, Stewart Island and the Auckland Islands
      - Nationally Vulnerable
  • It is illegal to kill a NZ Falcon deliberately


  • Falcons have been fully protected since 1970.





  • Why we should save the NZ Falcon

  • The NZ Falcon is a rare Native Bird.
  • NZ had almost 200 unique bird species, 49 are now extinct.
  • Falcon's eat small birds such as the sparrow and thrush, which eat grain and fruit crops. They are therefore useful to farmers.
